Angra do Heroismo, Portugal (Azores)

The Azores islands are approximately 930 miles west of the coast of Portugal. The archipelago stretches for quite some distance, but there is a group of moderate sized islands that are inhabited. The island Terceira (means "third" in Portuguese) is home to several cities to include Angra do Heroismo, Pria da Vitoria, & Biscoitos.

The islands have an ancient volcanic history. The picture above is of early buildings on the remnants of a volcano making part of the border of the port.

Portuguese explorers first set foot on the Azores islands in 1427AD and erected this monument. This was a standard monument used by the Portuguese to claim land.

From the middle of the city, one can see Sao Miguel island to the south.

Looking to the East is a view of a rock formation known as split rock.
